Weekly Message! Ethiopia’s International Relations Breakthrough From Regional Anchor to African Exemplar
Ethiopia possesses a unique history of international relations. Our consistent global engagement across eras has long prioritized internal strength, good neighborliness, regional cooperation, and continental unity. This national principle and policy are rooted in our history and culture; its consistency over time demonstrates how deeply it is intertwined with our nation building philosophy. Much like our status as the Land of Origins for humanity, this is a national heritage and identity we should take pride in and promote.
The recent meeting between the leaders of Ethiopia, Djibouti, and Somalia has reminded us of Ethiopia’s distinguished diplomatic history. This engagement is unique in its nature, timing, and scale, bringing hope that can be defined through various lenses. It stands as a primary testament to the fact that the holistic visions of the Medemer (Synergy) administration are being realized one by one.
When our party, Prosperity Party, was founded in November 2019 (Hidar 2012 EC) as a unified, national, multi ethnic party for the first time in Ethiopian history, international and diplomatic relations were among its core programs. Our party has identified and implemented four key diplomatic pillars: citizen centered diplomacy, prioritizing neighboring countries, strengthening regional integration, and expanding global cooperation.
Significant breakthroughs have been recorded in this regard, ranging from winning the Nobel Peace Prize and becoming a member of BRICS to evolving from a destination for international conferences to becoming a hub for global cooperation. This multi level success from the national to the global stage is guided by the party and government’s 10 year strategic plan. This plan focuses on the foundational motto: “Strong Party for a Strong Government; Strong Government for a Strong Nation.” The fruits of this internal strength are now resonating beyond our borders to neighboring countries, the region, the continent, and the world.
The recent visit of the leaders of Djibouti and Somalia to the eastern part of our country, including Jigjiga, demonstrates a relationship that has transcended official state ties into a familial bond. This follows the attendance of the leaders of these two nations, along with Kenyan President William Ruto, the President of South Sudan, and other friendly nations, at the inauguration ceremony regarding the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) earlier this year. Such events prove that Ethiopia’s international acceptance spans from regional to intercontinental horizons. The recent tripartite meeting between the leaders of Ethiopia, Djibouti, and Somalia marks a new chapter in this diplomatic standing.
The presence of these leaders at the inauguration of the Shebelle Resort in the Somali Region part of the "Dine for the Generation" (Gebeta Le Tiwulid) initiative shows how Ethiopia's reforms, starting from homes and offices, have scaled to become regional and continental. It serves as evidence that Ethiopia is a nation that seeks to prosper by embracing not only itself but its neighbors as well.
Therefore, let us continue to march forward, collectively achieving this vision of holistic prosperity that benefits the region and the world. By ensuring Ethiopia’s international relations breakthrough extends from being a regional anchor to an African exemplar, let us fulfill our generational duty to make our country as prosperous as its history and potential deserve.
