A Growing Economy and Effective Economic Diplomacy

Ethiopia has been undergoing a profound transformation process over the past few years. This transition has registered significant milestones, particularly within the economic sector. The recent activities of the Ethiopian delegation at the 2026 Spring Meetings of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in Washington, D.C., clearly demonstrate that the country’s impact-driven economic diplomacy is bearing fruit.

Since the onset of the reform era, initiatives launched through the Homegrown Economic Reform agenda have played a pivotal role in extricating the national economy from structural bottlenecks. Measures taken by the government to strengthen the private sector, attract foreign direct investment, and sustain infrastructure development have laid the foundation for today’s promising growth. To sustain these results, the high-level talks held by the Ethiopian delegation led by Finance Minister Ahmed Shide with international financial institutions and major global powers have been remarkably successful.

In terms of diplomatic relations, as Ethiopia’s ongoing economic reforms gain international recognition, the World Bank and the IMF have pledged to bolster their support for the country’s financial stability and the implementation of large-scale projects. Furthermore, agreements reached with the United Kingdom (UK) and the United States (USA) have transitioned bilateral trade and economic cooperation to a new chapter, centering on strategic economic partnerships and capital mobilization.

Another issue of global significance is Ethiopia's ongoing preparation to host the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP32). This preparation showcases Ethiopia’s commitment to green economy building and climate resilience to the world. This has further drawn the support of the World Bank and other development partners, creating significant momentum for the success of Ethiopia’s green legacy and development plans.

Overall, we are at a juncture where the Ethiopian economy is transitioning into a better phase, overcoming previous challenges. The success of this economic diplomacy has bolstered the international community's confidence in Ethiopia. As this impact-driven movement continues to strengthen, it will undoubtedly ensure the prosperity of citizens by enhancing the capacity of the private sector and realizing a thriving Ethiopia.
