The 7th General Election: A Historic Milestone in Ethiopia’s Democratic Journey, Institutional Advancement, and the Resilience of Its People

Although Ethiopia is an ancient nation renowned for its long-standing institutional history and indigenous values, its experience with political power transitions and the resolution of political differences has often been marked by armed struggles and the use of force. However, the recently concluded 7th General Election, conducted in a peaceful, free, and democratic manner, has corrected this historical pattern and opened a new chapter in which the country has advanced toward a more civilized politics of ideas and modern state-building.

This election not only demonstrated the Ethiopian people’s commitment to democratic governance and lasting peace, but also stood as a historic event characterized by remarkable cooperation among all stakeholders and institutions.

The most significant feature of this historic election was the active and mature participation of the electorate. As stated by H.E. President Taye Atske Selassie during a national recognition and appreciation program organized by the Ethiopian Civil Society Organizations Council, millions of Ethiopians registered and cast their votes, displaying admirable patience and discipline despite long queues. Through their participation, citizens demonstrated their love for their country and reaffirmed their determination to prevent past historical mistakes from recurring. By choosing those who champion the supremacy of ideas rather than force, the people expressed their national aspirations and pride.

Furthermore, this success was the result of the collective sacrifice and coordinated efforts of civil society organizations, political parties, national security institutions, and democratic institutions. Civil society groups and political parties played a vital role in demonstrating that political competition and the transfer of power should occur through peaceful and democratic electoral processes. Moreover, the professional discipline and Ethiopian civility displayed by election stakeholders and actors in the post-election period have provided evidence of the emergence of a new and mature political culture.

The nationwide recognition given to those who contributed to the election’s success has been widely acknowledged as a sign of Ethiopia’s institutional advancement and political modernization. Explaining the significance of this new chapter, our Party’s Vice President, H.E. Adem Farah, stated:

“When national institutions develop the practice of recognizing national achievements attained through collective effort and sacrifice, it makes a significant contribution to democratic institution-building. This is a political culture that should be nurtured, institutionalized, and sustained as part of modernizing our political system.”

From the pre-election preparations to Election Day and the ongoing post-election activities, the successful implementation of all processes has demonstrated Ethiopia’s readiness and commitment to advancing a civilized politics of ideas. This is a major achievement that has shown the world Ethiopia’s democratic maturity.

The victory of the 7th General Election, achieved through the resilience of the people, the coordination of stakeholders, and the strength of institutions, will further strengthen Ethiopia’s hope and serve as a solid foundation for realizing the vision of handing over a prosperous, stable, and reliable nation to future generations.

Ethiopia has Elected . Ethiopia has prevailed.
