The 7th General Election: A Milestone for Women’s Role in Nation Building
Women are the foundation of both the family and the nation. Despite making up half of our population, their political participation and economic benefits were historically neglected. The national reform movement identified this societal gap and has taken decisive measures to rectify it. These actions range from people centered initiatives ensuring equitable benefits to historic appointments of women to the highest levels of leadership.
The reform government, led by the Prosperity Party, has implemented numerous social programs to reduce the vulnerability of women. By focusing on social security through health, education, job creation, housing renovation, and financial accessibility, significant improvements have been recorded in the lives of women and their communities. We have built modern rehabilitation centers to empower women in difficult circumstances, transition them out of poverty, and help them become productive citizens.
Furthermore, feeding centers provide daily support to those in need, ensuring students receive adequate nutrition to follow their studies. With a focus on the next generation, over 30,000 pre schools have been constructed to prepare Ethiopian children to lead the country effectively in the future.
Alongside these social security efforts, unprecedented changes have secured women's leadership. The government achieved a 50 percent female cabinet and increased women's representation across all levels of state institutions, setting a record not just nationally, but globally. By appointing women to key leadership roles previously considered off limits, we have proven their effectiveness in high level governance. For the first time in our history, we have seen a female Head of State, Supreme Court President, Minister of Defense, Speaker of the House, Chairperson of the National Election Board, Mayor of Addis Ababa, Regional Presidents, and Zonal Administrators.
It is essential that this historic progress continues. The Prosperity Party is more committed than ever to elevating women's political participation and equitable benefits. The upcoming election is a key chapter in this journey. Therefore, we call upon all women to participate actively in all processes of the 7th national election, including as voters, to secure their fair share of development and highlight their vital role in building the nation.
On this occasion, we once again wish you a Happy International Women's Day!
