March 24:A Milestone for Citizen Dignity and Citizen Centered Diplomacy

March 24, 2018 E.C marked the day the reform government assumed national responsibility and initiated a new era of citizen dignity through the adoption of Citizen Centered Diplomacy. By breaking the narrow perception of the diaspora as outsiders or threats, the reform government ensured that every Ethiopian could share in the honor of their nation on the global stage.

From the very onset of the reform, the government established the safety and rights of citizens as its primary diplomatic agenda. This commitment was tested and proven through actions that went far beyond mere words. In particular, the exemplary leadership shown by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) during his various overseas visits where he personally brought home imprisoned citizens, often on his own presidential aircraft, sent a powerful message to the world about the immense value the government places on its people.

Bilateral agreements signed with various nations, particularly in the Middle East, have ensured that the rights of citizens are respected. This has enabled Ethiopians to live with legally protected dignity abroad, rather than being mere bystanders in foreign lands. Furthermore, the coordinated effort to repatriate tens of thousands of citizens from difficult conditions demonstrated the government's practical execution capacity.

Treating the diaspora as family has effectively dismantled the wall of suspicion that previously existed between the government and its citizens. Consequently, this has inspired a profound sense of ownership, encouraging citizens to stand firmly by Ethiopia’s truth in national affairs and diplomatic influence.

In general, Citizen Centered Diplomacy has not only reaffirmed that Ethiopia is a nation that stands for its people but has also elevated our national pride by transforming foreign relations from dry bureaucracy into a vibrant, people focused connection.
