Public and religious holidays are manifestations of our intertwined common identity and bond; Happy Timket (Epiphany) Festival to you all!
Our country, Ethiopia, is the home of numerous multinational cultures and identities. This multi-colored wealth stems from our country’s ancient origins and is a unique social phenomenon that has flourished through the flow of time. When expressed through public and religious holidays, this phenomenon does more than just solidify the foundation of the Ethiopian state; it ensures historical and cultural continuity, helping greatly to create a people with strengthened cultural ties and a stable nation-state.
The religious traditions of our country play an irreplaceable role in supporting this bond among people and the resilience of the state. Holidays celebrated by all faiths continue to be observed through generational succession, with their vibrance increasing over time without being diluted or interrupted. These festivals, which have been registered as intangible world heritages and public treasures by UNESCO, are seen attracting many domestic and foreign tourists every year.
Among these public and religious holidays, the Timket festival, celebrated today throughout all parts of our country, is one. Timket is a symbolic and divine event of the Creator performed so that mankind may be cleansed of sin and find salvation. Furthermore, Timket is a teaching that demonstrates the relationship between the Creator and man, as well as between man and nature. Water is one of the unique gifts we find in nature; without water, neither life nor nature are conceivable. Therefore, Timket is a wonderful religious event where the relationship and interaction of the Creator, man, and nature are reflected.
When the Prosperity Party was founded as an indigenous party, it was with these public and religious teachings and traditions in mind. According to its own political doctrine, our party is one that has been able to create a turning point in history by better defining the relationship between man and nature. Through its people-centered programs, our party has improved the living conditions of many citizens; and to reconcile our relationship with nature, it has implemented the Green Legacy initiative, performing the historic work of saving natural resources by planting 48 billion seedlings to date. Various recognitions and praises have been given for this, a key indicator being Ethiopia’s recent selection to host the UN Climate Summit, COP-34.
Just as we have succeeded in registering our tangible and intangible heritages on the world stage, the world is now giving recognition and honor to the people-centered and nature-care works being carried out under the leadership of the Prosperity Party. Beyond building our international influence, this situation proves that we have been able to ensure the historical and cultural continuity that is a hallmark of a strong nation-state. This is our collective victory that we should all be proud of and protect, as it is like those before it the result of our intertwined identity and bond.
Once again, Happy Timket Festival!
